Mandate: The Director, International Development is a key member of the business development team. He/she will lead in meeting the International group's targets, understanding the external market, improving business processes and supporting and providing input to strategy.  The role will be to grow Algonquin's International investments and will work closely with Atlantica Yield and the Abengoa-Algonquin Global Energy Services “AAGES” joint venture. A primary role of the Director, International Development is to develop and structure opportunities from beginning to end, both development and acquisitions.  This includes deal team management, financial model and project financing oversight, due diligence activities, negotiations and presenting findings and recommendations to VP, International Development and Senior Management.

Job Functions:

  • Business Commercialization
    • Transaction management and driving solutions to complex commercial issues for acquisition and development projects/initiatives
    • Build relationships and collaborate with relevant industry contacts, including investment bankers, developers, consultants and other companies as required to drive deals
      • Assist AAGES to identify, qualify and develop a strong funnel of projects and opportunities
      • Lead with others the interface between AAGES , Atlantica and Algonquin and lead/support deal coordination for investment opportunities
    • Understand the international renewable energy / clean water markets and regulatory and legislative environment  to help AAGES develop a future growth framework.
    • Consistently provide input to overall due diligence process, including leading, influencing and monitoring project team assigned to the project
    • Partner and support sign off from internal resources on model assumptions for accuracy of Board approval with VP
      • In consultation with the Algonquin enterprise risk management team, ensure that appropriate risk registers for international
  • Transaction Management
    • Responsible for and Subject Matter Expert for the development and review of financial models and strategic analysis to support acquisitions, development projects and other strategic opportunities
    • Contribute improvement ideas and support the day-to-day management and development of the business development team, including Senior Analysts and Analysts
    • Work closely with the treasury group to ensure the required capital is raised "
    • Develop and review financial models and strategic analysis to support acquisitions, development projects and other strategic opportunities
    • Provide guidance and leadership on improvement ideas and support the day-to-day management and development of the business development team, including Senior Analysts and Analysts
    • Responsible for adhoc requests from executive team, including CDO, CEO, CFO and Vice Chair. Requests include: project finance, financial analysis, tax analysis, due diligence, and data requests
    •  Lead the investment thesis for acquisition opportunities  
  • Corporate Strategy
    • Develop an understanding of the international renewable energy / clean water markets and regulatory and legislative environment  to help develop a future growth framework and strategy
  • People Management
    • Develop and lead others in partnership with the VP, International Development to build the team
    • Develop and foster relationship with AAGES and Atlantica teams
  • Reporting
    •  Provide project update reports
    • Reports for the CEO and Board of Directors

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A record of significant investment accomplishments in the domestic and/or international energy and water infrastructure sectors 
  • Ability to successfully deliver projects commercially, including development, acquisition and implementation.
  • Experience in deal structuring and alliance formation when undertaking projects
  • Awareness of commercial and contractual relationship and documentation requirements to negotiate commercial outcomes
  • Enhanced understanding of effective business and technical communication at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Direct involvement in and responsibility for financial analysis, negotiations strategy and post-merger integration
  • Significant experience in building complex valuation models
  • Advanced knowledge MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Confident, personable, professional presence
  • Focused, results-oriented individual with ability to multi-task and perform under pressure
  • Excellent relationship, team-building and communication skills
  • Comfort with a constant and rapidly-growing, change management environment
  • 5-10 years experience in renewable energy related finance an asset
  • Ability to work well under pressure and be able to meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize conflicting deliverables
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Bilingual in French would be an asset
