Purpose

This position is responsible for aligning the company’s efforts in meeting federally mandated North American Electric Reliability 693 standards compliance by analyzing reliability controls on The Bulk Electric System within the Algonquin North American NERC assets and support seamless integration of adherence to new standards and rulings as well as promoting sustainable processes, procedures and controls throughout the organization. This includes compliance training/analysis and managing components owned by the company under the oversight of US and Canadian governmental regulation divisions as needed such as US FERC and NERC Regional Entities.

Accountabilities

  • Coordinate, develop, document, facilitate and report Algonquin NERC asset procedures, plans and efforts to align with NERC, FERC and regional reliability standards, criteria and audits to Senior Algonquin Staff and externally with regulatory agencies above in both the US and Canada.
  • With minimal mentorship analyze and prepare regular updates and progress reports to the Director of NERC Compliance and Senior management regarding Algonquin's compliance status in order to further Algonquin's efforts for full compliance ratings and minimize material financial impacts to the company.
  • Assist a vast expansion of company subject matter experts including plant manager, executive VP's and operations staff as well as external regional regulations personnel to achieve vital compliance activities within government mandated timelines.
  • Serve as the senior specialist in detailed knowledge of NERC reliability compliance standards and requirements and work with operations process owners to assess, train and document areas of compliance through evidence collection and completion of NERC evidence submittals and other logs and articles of compliance related the reliability of producing electric power on the Bulk Electric System in North America.
  • Provide senior leadership in optimally advocating Algonquin's position regarding technical and business policy positions with regulators such as FERC, NERC and their delegated regions (Western Electric Coordinating Council, Texas Regional Entity, Northeast Power Coordinating Council, Reliability First, Southeast Power Coordinating Council) and in Canada: Independent Electric System Operator, MACD, New Brunswick Energy Utilities Board, Manitoba Hydro, Saskatchewan Power
  • Lead under the minimal direction, compliance through regulatory oversight proceedings including Audits and forma Data requests from the above listed regulating government organizations.
  • Coordinate timely scheduled and prepared meetings regarding new and existing regulatory changes and improvements
  • Provide controls to ensure Operations regulatory requirements are met on time so that no monetary penalty is bestowed on the company.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent (Degree in Engineering or other technical field preferred)
  • 3-5 years’ previous NERC experience including key roles in NERC audits or audit preparation
  • Position needs to have excellent interpersonal skills to interact with various technical business partners.
  • Must have good presentation skills to upper management and regulators.
  • Prior team leadership preferred
  • This position works to influence internal business owners on the importance of external regulation to NERC standards in a way that makes the regulators comfortable and appreciates the Algonquin NERC compliance program while maintaining good regulator relations.
  • This position requires integrity, outstanding organizational skills and communication skills as they will be a leader both internally with our own employees and externally to regulators.
  • Ability to acquire solid understanding of environmental permit and NERC compliance regulations and permits.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
