Mandate

The Business Development professional will work both independently and with existing sales and customer care professionals to create business opportunities to expand current business lines and to create new business opportunities in the regulated and unregulated utility environment. He/she will identify and recommend new products, services and businesses including enhancements of existing offerings to improve the overall profitability, earnings production and strategic positioning of the Company in its electric, gas and water businesses.

The successful candidate will be responsible for due diligence needed to support business development efforts (market research, needs assessment, detailed financial analysis of revenues and expenses, etc) and provide educated conclusions and recommendations regarding potential new product and service offerings. He or she will work closely with other Business Development professionals that hold similar roles within Liberty Utilities and that have responsibilities over other territories. The Business Development will consult with customers, corporate staff, consultants (as needed) and stakeholders in evaluating the profitability of new business or products; identify partnerships, alliances or strategic relationships that can add to the develop effort; and stay abreast of industry trends.

This position requires extensive local travel and limited overnight travel.

 

Job Functions

  • Manage and direct the roll-out of existing new business and growth projects and the development of new business opportunities in both regulated and unregulated electric utility sectors, including

On the development of new businesses and products:

  • Monitoring Industry Trends Regarding New Business Products
  • Developing Business Strategies for New Products and Businesses
  • Working with the Company’s sales team to identify opportunities within the current customer base
  • Working with Company BD professionals that have similar roles in other territories to develop best practices
  • Conducting due diligence necessary to determine the viability of new businesses or products
  • Developing the appropriate documentation to support conclusions (financial, technical, regulatory, legal)
  • Developing presentation material necessary to gain approval of new businesses or product
  • On the roll-out of existing new businesses and growth projects:
  • Aggressively pursuing the roll-out of product lines and initiatives that the Company has in progress.
  • Working with financial, operational, legal, regulatory professionals to quickly resolve business issues
  • Creating methodologies for identifying new customers using marketing material and/or databases
  • Networking with municipalities, business councils, chambers of commerce, etc. to develop prospects
  • Completing progress reports and presentations for Company and parent company senior management reviews

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Must have strong spreadsheet and analytical skills (must be able to develop and work with GAAP and Excel models)
  • Must have experince on the buy-side of business development 
  • Must have experience in reviewing and understanding financial statements 
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of experience in the electric/gas sectors with an emphasis on marketing and business development.
  • Knowledge of water, electricity, and natural gas markets and infrastructure, including supply, storage, transportation, transmission, generation, and capacity
  • Knowledge of regulatory policies applicable to water, electric, and gas sectors.
  • Strong PowerPoint skills
  • Strong oral and written skills
