Mandate: This position is responsible for providing project oversight during the development, planning, construction and turnover to Operations of one or more of Algonquin’s currently-contracted, renewable energy Major Projects.

Job Functions:

  • Provide oversight of all project activities during development, engineering, construction and turnover activities for one or more major capital renewable projects including, but not limited to, the following tasks:
    • Lead the project team through the development and progressive elaboration of all project management artifacts including project scope, schedule, budget, risk register, communications plan, etc.
    • Monitor the progress of the project team and report on the status of the development of all major owner (product) artifacts and deliverables including project permits, constructability studies, owner’s engineering, the financing plan, the safety plan, execution of land agreements, the operations plan, the owners construction staffing plan, and the insurance plan
    • Manage relationships with external project partners (energy off-taker, interconnection utility, equity partners, lenders, etc.) including delivery of all formal reporting requirements set out in agreements with these parties
    • Monitor progress and coordinate internal Algonquin team functions, subject matter experts and third party service providers assigned to the project including engineering and technical services, legal, finance, procurement, operations, regulatory and permitting, safety, asset management, risk management and business development
    • With the involvement of executive Business Development staff and internal subject matter experts participate in the coordination, preparation, and negotiation of major equipment supply and construction contracts
    • Coordinate and manage established major equipment supply contracts and relationships
    • Monitor and report on project costs for the purpose of compliance with project budgets and projecting cash flows including variance reporting
    • Write reports and correspondence related to project (engineering, costing, energy assessment, scheduling, etc.) as required/requested for the purpose of updating internal and external project clients
    • Provide Safety Leadership for the project, including the development and execution of the project specific Safety Plans
    • During construction, provide daily guidance and support to the project Site Manager in the execution of owner’s site responsibilities including management of owner’s site staff, safety and environmental compliance, progress monitoring, coordination of contractors and major equipment supply, and compliance with quality plans
    • With the participation of internal subject matter experts, legal staff and senior Business Development staff--scope, tender, negotiate (including the development of contract terms and conditions), retain and manage professional service providers required during development and construction of the project for permitting, environmental and regulatory services, civil engineering, electrical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying, and etc. all in accordance with corporate procurement policy and authority limits

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Engineering or equivalent education and work experience combined
  • Minimum of 10 years’ project management experience with a strong background in engineering and construction activities, including experience directly involved with major renewable energy project construction
  • Extensive renewable energy project development and construction experience
  • Solid experience with construction and major equipment supply contract development and contract management including participation in the development of contracting terms and methodologies, issue resolution, change management, etc.
  • Ability to travel within and outside of Canada
  • Valid Drivers license and passport with the ability to travel internationally as requested
  • Proficient with compliance relating to energy off-take and interconnection agreements
  • Strong understanding and demonstrable experience in construction related aspects of renewable energy power projects including geotechnical, civil, electrical and mechanical construction means and methods
  • Experience in project cost management and control, financial reporting and related components of project finance (pro-forma modelling, equity and debt contributions, cost projection, exchange rates, letters of credit, interest during construction, bonding and security, retainage and hold-back, liens, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of relevant insurance issues related to property and liability insurance, bonding and risk management
  • Strong understanding of permit compliance, regulatory restrictions and application to renewable energy projects
  • Experienced with regard to worker and public safety management
  • MS Office suite of products including Microsoft Project
  • French/English bilingual is an asset
