The distribution business group (Liberty &Empire) provides rate regulated water, electricity and natural gas utility services to over 782,000 customers in the United States. The transmission business group invests in rate regulated electric transmission and natural gas pipeline systems in the United States and Canada.
The generation business group (Algonquin) owns a portfolio of regulated and long term contracted North American based wind, solar, hydroelectric and thermal powered generating facilities representing more than 2,500 MW of installed capacity.
Mandate: This position is responsible for; (1) project management services, and (2) technical support services, both related to the individual’s area of expertise and both related to the power generation interests of Algonquin Power Co. (APCo), primarily for the Asset Management and Operations of the facilities and equipment. As needed, support may be provided to the Business Development and Acquisitions departments.
- Provides project management services including preparing; (1) scope of work definition and tracking, (2) budget estimating and cost tracking, and (3) project schedule and updates for the purpose of obtaining project approval, including revisions as required, and reporting to responsible department.
- Provide project management services including, as required; (1) work planning and coordination with sub-contractors and suppliers, (2) liaison with field Operations staff, (3) management of technical documentation (manuals and drawings), (4) procurement of engineering services and materials including obtaining budget estimates and defining quality control parameters, (5) preparing project close-out documentation including new/revised operations/maintenance procedures, (6) ensuring appropriate supervision of contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers with respect to quality and safety, and (7) determine appropriate method for soliciting team input and providing project updates (format/frequency/audience) and proceeding accordingly for the purpose of ensuring optimal value for APCo. This job function may be undertaken as an individual but, more often, as the manager of a multi-disciplinary team including technical support from within the department as well as representatives from other departments including Asset Management, Operations, and/or Development and Acquisitions.
- Provide technical support services as requested including; (1) as a contributing team member assigned specific tasks by the project manager as noted above, (2) providing technical leadership on the issue of maintenance (predictive, preventative, reliability centred etc.) including developing procedures, (3) undertaking research on technical issues and assimilating results, (4) providing technical calculations and opinions including responding to emergency requests, and (5) assist in development of other technical documentation, programs, or procedures, including those related to worker safety, for the purpose of ensuring appropriate technical accountability of work product to the benefit of Algonquin.
- React to changes in work assignments and priority and undertake all other tasks as assigned.
- Perform all work treating worker and public safety as paramount and in compliance with all environmental and other regulatory constraints.
- Projects may include, with respect to the role of project management or technical support, but are not limited to; equipment or facility rehabilitation, asset expansion, project development, acquisition (due diligence) assessment, ongoing asset assessment including long term capital planning, continuous process improvement, repairs and maintenance including maintenance shutdowns, construction, contractual issues including negotiation and management, regulatory compliance, legal proceedings, insurance claims, process audits, process design.
- Must be either a licensed Professional Engineer in Canada (Ontario preferred) or a Certified Engineering Technologist or Technician, or posses the equivalent work experience as judged by Algonquin.
- Must have working knowledge of the Project Management Institute’s “Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
- Must have working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Programs; Outlook for email correspondence and meeting scheduling, Excel for analysis and cost tracking, and Word for preparation of reports, procedures, and other project documentation.
- Preference for having working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs; PowerPoint for preparing internal presentations, Project for project scheduling, and Access for database development, population and maintenance.
- Must have the ability to utilize new software as required with the support of training as needed.
- Must have a basic understanding of worker and public safety issues and environmental regulations.
- Must have the ability to succeed in Algonquin provided practical and table top safety training.
- Senior Project Manager’s will typically possess a high level of knowledge and understanding of their area of expertise gained through a minimum of ten years for engineers and fifteen years for technologists/technicians of relevant experience and training including relevant industry codes and good utility practice. Those areas of mechanical expertise as defined at Algonquin are:
- Mechanical – heavy rotating equipment and auxiliary systems for hydro, wind, solar and/or thermal power generation equipment (turbines, generators, gearboxes, bearings, pumps, hydraulics, governors, pneumatics, brakes, lubrication, water control gates and gate equipment, blowers, boilers, HRSG’s, etc.).
- Thermal – thermal generation equipment and auxiliary systems for thermal power generation equipment (steam and combustion turbines, boilers, HRSG’s, water treatment systems, control systems, etc.). Working knowledge of benchmarking and other productivity improvement techniques.
- Senior Project Manager’s will typically possess a general working knowledge and understanding of other technical disciplines and equipment. Those areas of general working knowledge as defined at Algonquin are:
- Electrical – electrical generation equipment, protection and controls, and auxiliary systems at high, medium and low voltage for hydro, wind, solar and/or thermal power generation equipment (generators, transformers, switchgear, electrical protection, excitation systems, transformers, cables, MCC’s, PLC’s, HMI’s, SCADA, communication systems, metering, prime movers from a controls perspective, etc.).
- Civil – civil structures, including concrete, steel and timber, conventional repair and maintenance methods like injection, anchoring, pinning etc. that support power generation facilities (dams, powerhouses, gates, embankments, control weirs, retaining walls, coffer dams, foundations, etc.). In addition, must have a good understanding of concepts related to dam safety like structural stability, hydrostatic pressure, hydrology, piping, etc.
- Resource Assessment – hydrology and power and energy simulation of hydropower generating stations, simulation of power and energy from thermal generating stations, wind resource assessment and solar resource assessment
- Senior Project Manger’s must be able to communicate clearly and accurately, verbally and in writing, including instructions and decisions both internally to Algonquin and externally to suppliers, contractors, and consultants. Are able to provide clear direction and explanation to project team members as well as any direct reports. Must listen to and accurately interpret direction, feedback, ideas and concerns.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and the ability to rent vehicles on the corporate account.
- Must be able and flexible to travel within Canada and the United States as needed.
- French/English bilingual preferred.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is preferred.
