Mandate: This position is responsible for providing engineering and technical coordination and support services related to a wide range of power generation technologies of interest to Algonquin’s major development and construction projects – mainly with respect to civil and mechanical engineering disciplines.

Job Functions:

  • Provides engineering and technical coordination services for major Business Development projects, including preparing; (1) technical requisitions/scope of work definition, (2) equipment tendering/procurement and supply chain coordination, analysis and expediting, (3) budget estimating, (4) project schedule and updates, and (5) resolution of inquiries, conflicts, and challenges
  • Provide engineering and technical coordination services including, as required; (1) work planning and coordination with sub-contractors and equipment suppliers, (2) liaison with field construction & Operations stakeholders, (3) management of technical documentation (manuals and drawings), (4) procurement of engineering services and materials including obtaining budget estimates and defining quality control parameters, (5) preparing project close-out documentation including new/revised operations/maintenance procedures, (6) ensuring appropriate supervision of contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers with respect to quality and safety, and (7) soliciting stakeholder/team input and providing project updates (format/frequency/audience) and proceeding accordingly for the purpose of ensuring optimal value for Algonquin. This job function may be undertaken as an individual but, more often, as part of a multi-disciplinary team including technical support from within the department as well as representatives from other project stakeholders (landowners, equipment suppliers, engineering consultants, regulatory agencies, etc.)
  • Provide technical support services as requested including; (1) as a contributing team member assigned specific tasks by the Project Manager as noted above, (2) providing technical leadership on developing procedures (construction, commissioning/start-up, operations, (3) undertaking research on technical issues and assimilating results, (4) providing technical calculations and opinions including responding to emergency requests, and (5) assist in development of other technical documentation, programs, or procedures, including those related to worker safety, for the purpose of ensuring appropriate technical accountability of work product to the benefit of Algonquin
  • Potentially using computational tools and technical specifications as follows:
    • Mapping/Arc-GIS/AutoCad, Wind-Pro, PV-Syst., etc.
    • Geotechnical services (boring, test pitting, laboratory analysis, piezometers, reports)
    • Wind turbine power generation technology (power curves, equipment specifications, noise guarantee’s and curves, etc.
    • Ancillary equipment (padmount transformers, ventilation equipment, maintenance buildings, SCADA/IT/communications,
    • Other technology skills related to wind/hydro/solar power generation facilities
  • React to changes in work assignments and priority and undertake all other tasks as assigned
  • Perform all work treating worker and public safety as paramount and in compliance with all environmental and other regulatory constraints
  • Projects and tasks may include construction and contractual issues including management, regulatory compliance, or relate to earlier stage project development, and M&A acquisition due diligence assessment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ontario Professional Engineer certification preferred
  • 5-10 years' of related work experience in Renewable Energy 
  • Must have 3-5 years working experience in the renewable and/or power generation industry
  • Must have working knowledge of the Microsoft Office programs; Outlook for email correspondence and meeting scheduling, Excel for analysis and cost tracking, and Word for preparation of reports, procedures, and other project documentation, PowerPoint for presentations, Access for data-base management, Project for Gantt charts.
  • Ability to utilize new software as required with the support of training as needed.
  • Must have a basic understanding of worker and public safety issues and environmental regulations.
  • Must have the ability to succeed in Algonquin provided safety training including practical and table top training.
  • Project Engineer will typically possess knowledge and understanding of their area of expertise gained through a minimum of three to five years for engineers of relevant experience and training including relevant industry codes and good utility practice. Those areas of expertise as per the disciplines as defined at Algonquin are:
    • Mechanical – heavy rotating equipment and auxiliary system for hydro and/or thermal power generation equipment (turbines, generators, pumps, hydraulics, pneumatics, brakes, lubrication, water control gates, blowers, boilers, HRSG’s, etc.).
    • Thermal – thermal generation equipment and auxiliary systems for thermal power generation equipment (steam and combustion turbines, boilers, HRSG’s, water treatment systems, control systems, etc.). Working knowledge of benchmarking and other productivity improvement techniques.
    • Civil – civil structures, including concrete, steel and timber, conventional construction, repair and maintenance methods like grout injection, anchoring, pinning etc. that support power generation facilities (foundations, roads, piling, culverts, steel structures, etc.). In addition, must have a good understanding of concepts related to structural safety like stability, hydrostatic pressure, hydrology, piping, etc.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and the ability to rent vehicles on the corporate account.
  • Ability to travel within Canada and the United States as needed.
  • French/English bilingual an asset
