Purpose

This position actively support the generation business group by managing energy market reporting and settlement function and lead continuous improvement efforts including automation projects. This role will play a critical function in order to provide market insights/knowledge for budget and strategic projects

Accountabilities

Energy Market Reporting & Settlements

  • Review, analyze and distribute periodic reports for production, prices, revenue, availability, Key Performance Indicators and outages. Distribute weekly and monthly market settlement Status Update report to management. Perform and supervise energy market Settlement with customers, utilities, market organizations and Retail load Settlements
  • Review, conduct and compile market settlements reports for the contractual counterparties Renewable energy contracts (RECs), Production Tax Credits (PTCs) derivatives (physical / financial swaps), Capacity NOx, reserve, regulation, ancillaries and other financial instruments.
  • Prepare and distribute invoices to internal and external customers. Validate Production, prices and market settlements to ensure revenue accuracy from SOX perspective
  • Review and approve Broker payment invoices for executed deals in trade blotter and settle with counterparties on any product bought from the market
  • Maintain Risk Control Matrix for the team and standardize the controls across new projects
  • Support Energy Services in market analysis of various asset regions

External Regulatory Reporting and Internal Compliance team Support

  • Canadian Assets Reporting: Review, analyze, compile and distribute regulatory reports for availability, environmental compliance, Operation update, production, Revenue settlement and government statistical information to Statistic Canada, NEB, AUC, Government of Canada Parks Canada Agency, Hydro One, IESO, HQ-MNR, Natural Resource Canada, OEFC, PUCs, etc. Also, internally support Asset Management, Accounting and EHS for regulatory data requests.
  • US Asset Reporting: Review, analyze, compile and distribute regulatory reports for Energy Information Administration, environmental compliance, Operation update, Retail load, production, Revenue settlement and government statistical information to EIA, FERC EQRs, PUCs, etc.
  • Support Compliance and legal department to review filling docket and orders. Work with external lawyers where necessary to file PUC reports

Financial Planning & Analysis Function

  • Assist Asset Management and Finance in the budgeting and forecasting process. Help in validation of market forecast and rule to ensure reasonability of forecast
  • Gather, analyze, interpret data, generate repots and charts for monthly/Quarterly/Annual OPS Scorecard - Hydro Availability Metric, Hydro Outage Report, Scorecard Production and Availability Reports
  • Monitor, analyze and provide quantity and price variances for all Market settlement sites. Provide high level commentary to provide reasonability of the performance

Automation Initiatives and Special projects

  • Formulate the plan to automate the energy market settlement function
  • Work on special analytical projects as assigned to contribute strategically in the growth of the company                                                                                                                                                                                      

Education & Experience

  • Candidate must possess post graduate degree or an accounting designation in an applicable area of study (business or technical).
  • Candidate should possess strong skills in the areas of analytics and spreadsheet/database creation and maintenance through formal training and/or experience.
  • Preference would be for a candidate who also possesses a background in energy market settlements. Experience in power generation industry (hydro, wind and/or thermal) preferred.
  • Eight to ten years post-secondary experience in a relevant role.
  • Must have working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Programs including; Excel (advanced level required), Outlook, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Preference for having working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs including: Access for database development, population and maintenance; Visual Basic for macro writing and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work as a team member with peers and management to help drive continuous improvement
