Mandate: This position is responsible for Mechanical Engineering within the Technical Services group.  This role will provide expertise based on education and experience for all aspects of Algonquin’s power generation assets as part of the Technical Services group to ensure the long term profitability of the assets.  This position will also manage engineering/maintenance capital projects for Liberty Power Assets.  In addition, this position will provide overall leadership to a team in coaching, development and employee engagement initiatives for the team.

Job Functions:

  • Provide discipline engineering knowledge and expertise for operating and maintenance capital projects for Liberty Power
  • Provide both leadership and technical guidance and assistance to project managers within the Technical Services team
  • Research all aspects of power generation technology as required, assimilating the information into expertise, educating others in the organization at the appropriate level, debating technical issues both inside and outside the organization, and providing opinions based on the developed expertise.
  • Analyze operating data on an as needed basis (at the request of stakeholders or based on production variances) to determine trends and identify concerns including conducting or coordinating consequential root cause reviews.
  • Participate, conduct, and/or coordinate analysis’ related to equipment wear and failures to develop opinions with respect to root cause for failures of the assets.
  • Provide project planning services for technology based projects including:
    • Preparing the scope of work definition
    • Preparing budget estimation
    • Project scheduling for the purpose of project justification and obtaining project approval, including revisions as required
  • Provide project management services for Liberty Power based projects including:
    • Work planning and coordination with sub-contractors and suppliers
    • Liaison with field Operations staff
    • Management of technical documentation (manuals and drawings),
    • Procurement of outside engineering services and materials including obtaining budget estimates and defining quality control parameters
    • Maintaining and reporting on scope tracking, budget variances, schedule updates
    • Preparing project close-out documentation including new/revised operations/maintenance procedures
    • Ensuring appropriate supervision of contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers with respect to quality and safety
    • Determine appropriate method for soliciting team input and providing project updates (format/frequency/audience) and proceeding accordingly for the purpose of ensuring optimal value for Algonquin. 
  • React to changes in work assignments and priority and undertake all other tasks as assigned.
  • Perform all work treating worker and public safety as paramount and in compliance with all environmental and other regulatory constraints.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a licensed Professional Engineer in Canada with 7-10 years’ experience in a Mechanical Engeering role
  • Experience in power generation similar to Liberty Power assets; Hydro/Waterpower generation, Solar, Wind and Combined Cycle Gas generation.
  • Must have a high aptitude for technical learning and information assimilation, understanding when outside expertise resources are required and identifying and procuring those resources as need.
  • Must have strong communication skills as transferring developed expertise to others as needed is critical as well as communicating and defending technology based opinions.
  • Must have working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Must have the ability to utilize new software as required with the support of training as needed.
  • Must have a basic understanding of worker and public safety issues and environmental regulations.
  • Must have the ability to succeed in the internal safety training.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and the ability to rent vehicles on the corporate account.
  • Must be able and flexible to travel within Canada and the United States up to 20% or as needed
  • Bilingual French/English an asset
