This position is mainly responsible for the handling of most of the division’s customer payments and proper application into the billing software. Payments come in via direct USPS mail, bank lock box (direct import into the billing system and individual entry), and electronic bank draft. Other duties include researching payment application errors, communicating with customers regarding questions on payments, reviewing for accuracy and exporting billings from billing software to 3rd party billing vendor, tracks bulk mail permit and in house billing supply needs, processes journal entries for Home Office bank transfers. Support during rates cases, audits, etc. Other duties related to the support of the Customer Service functions of the Company.


  • Retail Lockbox downloads – bank customer payment receipts

  • Wholesale Lockbox downloads – bank customer payment receipts not applied by bank

  • Customer Payment Application – direct receipt payments

  • Research payment application errors, irregularities

  • Communicate with customers, customer service and accounting staff/management on issues

  • Process customer ACH (auto draft) transmissions

  • Create deposits for non-AR related receipts as directed by Sr. staff

  • Produce daily reconciliations for IVR and third party payment vendors

  • Create and produce reports as needed within the Customer Care Department

  • Research customer accounts and analyze historical items and determine resolution.

  • Will read and process checks and payment coupons, bank notifications, spreadsheets and other accounting documents


Education & Experience

  • Work requires a high school diploma or equivalent

  • Quick typing and 10-key skills

  • Knowledge of MS Windows, Word and Excel. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills required.

  • Specific experience in payment application and data entry

  • Entry level accounting experience preferred

  • Excellent internal and external oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to take initiative and follow direction

  • Additional academic education, professional training or work experience which demonstrates the potential to perform the duties of the position a plus

  • Valid drivers license

  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude and approach to tasks, personnel and other individuals work brings in contact with are require

  • Able to prioritize duties on a day to day basis and be flexible with the daily schedule and assigned tasks

  • Must have the ability to perform duties and function effectively with little supervision.

The distribution business group (Liberty Utilities) provides rate regulated water, electricity and natural gas utility services to over 750,000+ customers in the United States. The transmission business group invests in rate regulated electric transmission and natural gas pipeline systems in the United States and Canada.
