The distribution business group (Liberty &Empire) provides rate regulated water, electricity and natural gas utility services to over 782,000 customers in the United States. The transmission business group invests in rate regulated electric transmission and natural gas pipeline systems in the United States and Canada.
The generation business group (Algonquin) owns a portfolio of regulated and long term contracted North American based wind, solar, hydroelectric and thermal powered generating facilities representing more than 2,500 MW of installed capacity.
Empire’s internship and co-op programs are all about hands on learning and provide professional growth and experience with substantial benefits. Our program offers real-world work experience to college students.
The length of your experience at Empire will depend on your academic schedule and our company needs. Empire provides two options:
Internship: Full-time employment during the summer; usually May to mid-August.
Co-op: Full-time during one semester and summer break; approximately eight months.

Opportunities are offered in our Energy Supply and our Engineering and Line Services departments. You’ll get to apply the knowledge you have gained in the classroom while you’re with us. Have a day-to-day work assignment and project responsibilities with real meaning
Participate in operations, planning, and project teams to learn about:

- The technical and business skills required to succeed in your professional career
- The importance of teamwork and communication
Present your project's findings and how you contributed to the company
To be eligible for internship or co-op positions, applicants must:
Be enrolled in a related engineering degree program
Sophomore or higher standing
A GPA of 3.0 or higher. Typically interns have at least a “B” average in their field of study
Successfully pass Empire’s drug screen and background check
Be legally eligible to work in the United States
